Environmentally Friendly Building Board

Fermacell is dry lining board which is increasingly being recognised by the building industry not only for its high spec performance, but its sustainable properties which help to improve the overall BREEAM rating of a building.

Quite apart from the sustainability aspects of Fermacell, it is a multi-purpose board providing high acoustic, fire, moisture, impact resistance and excellent racking strength properties.

Architects, main contractors and installers not only look for these product qualities, but want faster systems that are easy to schedule into the fitting out programme.

The environmental methods of manufacture and 100% recyclability of Fermacell partitioning boards led to the use of the product in the first British primary school to be built with a totally eco friendly innovative timber panel system made from recycled wood cuttings.

Initially the internal walls in the new St Agnes C of E Primary School in Longsight, Manchester, were to be of painted timber. However, the environmental credentials of Fermacell convinced architects and contractors to install 3,000 sq m of the fibre re-inforced gypsum board to benefit from its strength, impact resistance, and fire and acoustic qualities.

This pioneering construction features 600 Eurban panels of cross laminated layers of timber from sustainably managed forests in Switzerland.

Fermacell is created at four state of the art production facilities in Germany and Holland. It was introduced to the building and construction market in 1971 and has been available in the U K and Ireland since 1989.

The real alternative to plasterboard, Fermacell is made from 80% recycled gypsum and 20% cellulose fibres from recycled papers. It is formed into dense sheet material with recycled water and then cured and cut to size – giving the building and construction industry a high performance multi-purpose product with superb moisture resistance, excellent acoustic and impact resistance qualities.

All by-products are fed back into the process with no water wasted, making it a fully recyclable process! Fermacell’s green credentials are recognised by organisations across England, Scotland and Wales and is registered on the WRAP directory as 98% recycled content.

Both Fermacell and the process have been awarded the coveted Rosenheim Institute of Construction Biology and Ecology Certificate and the Low Emissions Product Eco Certificate, as well as being defined a ‘healthy living’ building material for allergy-free environments.

Fermacell Marketing Manager David Prout commented: “As a company we are committed to being at the forefront of sustainability. This approach was further underlined by the launch of a revolutionary new product called ‘Greenline’ at Ecobuild this year.

“Designed to effectively tackle VOCs, the main difference between ‘Greenline’ and standard Fermacell high performance dry lining boards, is the addition of a natural additive that absorbs VOCs leaching out of compounds as gases.

“Greenline is an exciting development which re-enforces Fermcell’s position as an innovative company prepared to tackle and solve challenging issues facing the construction industry,” he said.
